This Silver Hemidrachm is a beautiful example of a type of coinage exchanged along the Great Silk Road, the ancient trade route used by merchants to transport luxury items such as spices, jewels, and silk from China to Constantinople. Magnificent, sharp imagery
Design of Tabaristan coinage was influenced by coins from the preceding Sassanian Empire. The obverse depicts Umar wearing a crown in the style of the Sassanian King Khusru II. The reverse features a Sassanian fire altar surrounded by two attendants.
